Piedmont Connect Supports Reducing Emissions with Electric Vehicles

The City of Piedmont’s Climate Action Plan 2.0 provides a roadmap for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the community. A major goal of the plan is to eliminate emissions from the transportation sector, which has consistently comprised nearly half of Piedmont’s total GHG emissions. One strategy to achieve this is by accelerating the adoption of EVs and the growth of EV Charging Stations in Piedmont. The City has an ambitious target of 50% EV ownership by 2030 and 100% EV ownership by 2050. Currently, EVs account for 11% of the vehicles registered in Piedmont. Which EV is right for you? Compare price, battery range and estimated environmental impact of the nation’s top-selling 2023 models on Washington Post’s EV guide.

Bloomberg Green’s EV ratings dashboard catalogues the models currently available in the US. Along with car specs, they also have come up with a Green rating for each model, based on how efficiently the cars travel once on the road and the resources needed to manufacture the batteries in those cars. Methodology is discussed.

Piedmont Connect Encourages More EV Chargers

The City of Piedmont wants to support residents in their efforts to buy, lease, and drive electric vehicles. The on-line building permit application procedure can help residents get a charger permit in less than 3 days. The City is working with East Bay Community Energy to expand opportunities to charge electric vehicles in public places around town.

City Council approved spending an additional $30,000 to help fund four electric vehicle charging stations on Magnolia Avenue just west of the Exedra Plaza at Piedmont Park and associated improvements required to meet federal American with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements.

“Public electric vehicle charging stations are intended to further support the adoption of electric vehicles in Piedmont,” said Alyssa Dykman, the City’s Sustainability Program Manager. Piedmont Connect Supports Safer Streets Program

On July 20, 2020, the City Council authorized staff to update the Pedestrian Bicycle Master Plan (PBMP) adopted in 2014 with an inclusion of a traffic safety component. The project is now called Piedmont Safer Streets. This update is intended to help implement Piedmont’s General Plan and Complete Streets Policy in order to address the community’s needs. The addition of a safety component to the original PBMP interweaves the goal of the complete street policy, which is to develop an efficient and safe street network for Piedmont, with traffic safety considerations for all road users- pedestrians, cyclists and drivers.
